The SII caliber VD54B is a no jewels quartz chronograph movement. Something to note about this watch movement is that the chronograph second hand is located in a subdial at 6:00. The central second hand is the current time second hand.

Chronograph Sequence:

The chrono sequence on the VD54B is the same as most chronograph watches:

  • Start – top button
  • Stop – top button
  • Reset – bottom button

Resetting the chronograph hand to zero:

On the caliber VD54, the chronograph seconds hand is located in the 6:00 subdial. If your chronograph seconds hand isn’t lining up, here is how you can adjust it back to zero:

  • Pull the crown out to time setting position (position 1)
  • Use the chronograph pushers to move the hand until it lines up at the 60 (or zero/12:00 position) mark.

Note: The top button will make the hand go backwards, the bottom button will make it advace forward. Press and hold the top or bottom button for more than a second to make the chronograph second hand move rapidly. Since the chronograph seconds and minutes work together, this is also how you get the 60 minute hand (subdial at 9:00) to line up.

For example, if your 60 minute hand is resetting to the 5 minutes mark instead of the 60, you would pull the crown out to position 1, and press the top button while the chronograph second hand spins around quickly and the 60 minute hand slowly advances to the position you want it in. Then, be sure to line up the chrono second hand again and push the crown back to position 0.

Crown/Stem Removal:

Look for the hole with “Push” and an up arrow. Using your tweezers or a toothpick, push the lever while pulling out the stem.

Accuracy:

SII/TMI claims the caliber VD54B has an accuracy rating of less than +/- 20 when the watch is operating in the normal temperature range. They do not say what they consider the “normal” temperature range to be.

VD54A, VD54B, VD54C:

The current spec sheets for the VD54 list a VD54C variation with a revision date of June 5, 2018. We are still looking into the differences between the A, B, C variations, but it’s likely that they are small updates. If you know, please comment below. In the meantime, this post will be updated when we learn more.

Caliber VD54 VS VD53:

There is a similar SII caliber VD53. The main difference between the two movements is that the VD53 has a date window between 4:00 and 5:00. It is also a taller movement at 4.57mm compared to the 3.97mm thick VD54.

SII VS TMI VS Hatori:

You might find this caliber listed as being produced by Hattori aka Epson aka TMI (Time Module Inc) aka Seiko Instruments Inc. We’re not sure why all the different names, but sure they all lead back to Seiko. Read more here

From Wikipedia:

Seiko Holdings Corporation (SEIKO) delegates a large portion of the manufacturing in its watch business to SII and EPSON. Most of watches manufactured by SII are sold through the Seiko Watch Corporation, a subsidiary of Seiko Holdings Corporation. In recent years Seiko Instruments has tried to establish its own marketing channel and brands – Sizukuishi Watch, appetime, J.SPRINGS, ISSEY MIYAKE, tsumori chisato, ALESSI, cacharel, etc.

On January 26, 2009, Seiko Instruments and Seiko Holdings announced that the two companies will be merged on October 1, 2009 through a share swap. Seiko Instruments became a wholly owned subsidiary of Seiko Holdings on October 1, 2009.

Possible Date Codes?

If you look at the movement featured in the images and video on this page, you will see a marking at the top right of the movement: AAIN. We believe this to be a production date code from SII, but it still needs to be confirmed. If you have access to your movement, please comment below if you watch has a similar marking with the same or different letters.

Replacement Price:

At the time of this post, replacement prices for the VD54B were found online in the range of $20-30 USD.

This movement is used in the Lancaster Ref: OLA0483 quartz chronograph watch. So I would expect to find this movement in $50-$100 watches.

Used in the Ducati Meccanica time pieces. $175USD at time of purchase in 2012/2013. Dial at 3 is 24 hour indicator. Dial at 6 is stopwatch seconds. Dial at 9 is stopwatch minutes (60 minutes max). Screw-down crown. Hacking. Only one position, used to set time.

Forgot to mention: One tick per second so it’s not a smooth second hand on the main- and sub-dials.

Question: I recently changed the battery myself but I did not short it with touching the AC and the battery. My watch started working right away with the new battery. Should I still short it or let it go as is? Will I get as much battery power or am I risking damaging anything?

Still can’t make sense of these instructions. The “sub-dial” at 3 o’clock is still not returning back to zero. The other two are so-so. One is at zero while one refuses to go to true zero. its nuts. Any idea how to set each sub dial individually?? Very frustrating. Were these not a gift from my wife they would be returned or trashed.

Thanks for that info. Being a bit OCD, and having the 24hour dial NOT being at zero was bothering me a lot. I have since found the instruction sheet and have re-set the stop watch function back to zero (well, as close as it gets…not perfectly straight).

Again, thanks very much. I’m just happy to have these two presents from my generous wife.

Had the stem and crown pull out and get lost on my Invicta T21 using Hattori v54. No screw down or crown protection on the case. No warranty as treated as wearer abuse. I love watch and wish to repair. Invicta wants to charge more than I paid for watch, maybe with same results.

What is the Invicta T21? I can’t find anything online, maybe there’s another model number on the back? I would say you can get another stem but you won’t have the right crown for the watch since it was lost with the old stem. That is probably why they are charging so much for the repair. Did you see if there are any watches like yours for sale anywhere?

Checked for replacement watch, all out of stock. Model # 23516. Had a senior moment, it is a TI-22. Love a big titanium watch. Sometime I wear it out and the time is right twice a day.

How much did Invicta quote to repair it?

This movement is in a cheap Timex Chronograph Quarz (with Tachimeter scale) I bought in the 80s. The movement has Morioka, Tokei Inc, No Jewels, Japan (dot matrix printed) on it. The case back says Timex, Water Resistant, Movement Japan, Assembled in Hong Kong, C1, Stainless steel. It works just as stated in your article, thank you so much because this information is not available from Timex.

Looking for vintage watches in Mexico, I found a replica of a Girard Perregaux without a date window (Ferrari edition) with this VD54B machine in TMI version, with the data engraved with dot matrix on the main plate.
It is noted that it is of Japanese manufacture.
The watch had a broken glass but it works fine.

I have just opened up my 25 year old Zeitner Arctica and found the VD54A inside. Mine was apparently made by Morioka Tokei Inc. Your tips on testing the chronograph are fantastic, I’ve spent the last 15 years thinking there was something wrong with it and I had to live with it! I’ve now a new glass on order so will post a photo of the front when it’s all back together.

And here it is looking all nice and shiny again for the first time in decades!

The buttons are so worn that it’s very difficult to use the chrono – I need to try and locate some replacements, but the watch is running beautifully and it was great to finally get the hands pointing back as they should

Ironically, Sekonda uses these in their Xpose chrono’s, irony being that once upon a time Sekonda duelled Seiko for the low to mid tier watch bracket and in more recent years supped at both Miyota’s and Seiko’s movement tables after their almost bankruptcy from using the diabolical Remex when the Soviet collapsed leaving Sekonda in the lurch.
