ETA 2824-2 Clones

What is an ETA 2824 Clone?

An ETA 2824 clone is an automatic watch movement with identical specs to the legendary workhorse movement ETA caliber 2824 (or more accurately the current 2824-2).

List of ETA 2824 Clones:

Did we miss one? Add it in the comments below!

ETA “Clone” or Fake ETA?

ETA “clone” does not mean fake. ETA clone means that the movement design is based on the original designs that ETA used when creating the 2824-2 movement. The designs were patented, but utility patents expire after 20 years. Since the 2824-2 was introduced in 1982, the patents have officially expired. For this reason, it is possible to deconstruct the ETA 2824-2 and produce a movement based on the original design. Many have done so as it is perfectly legal.

Then what is a fake ETA?

If the movement is a clone and also marked “ETA” then it would be considered to be a fake or counterfeit. Similar to the watch it is cased in, if a watch that looks like a Sub was made in China yet has Rolex Submariner on the dial, then it is a fake watch. Without any reference to Rolex, even though it looks the same, it is considered an homage or clone.

Parts Interchangeability / Movement Swapping:

Keep in mind that just because movements are based on the designs of the ETA 2824 doesn’t mean that they are 100% identical. The clone movements are “based on” the 2824 but since they are not being manufactured by ETA themselves, they are not using the exact same tooling and possibly not the same materials.

Similar but not the same:

The factories making clone movements can make some changes to the original design for purposes of what they consider to be improvements, or similar to make their movements as proprietary as possible.

A well-known example of this is the Sellita SW200-1 which is the most widely used Swiss Made clone of the 2824-2. The layman’s way to distinguish the two apart is that the Sellita has 26 jewels and the ETA has 25.

While some watch enthusiasts have had better experiences with the SW200-1, the extra jewel isn’t proven to make it better movement. One thing for sure, the extra jewel is part of the DNA of the SW200-1 and separates it from the other 25 jewel clones, if only by a quick glance at the jewel count on the rotor.

Swapping depends on the location of the dial feet:

Theoretically, the ETA 2824-2 and all of the clones should be swapable based on diameter and movement height. But, after the measurements are confirmed, it will still depend on whether or not the clone changed the location of the dial feet. They should all be the same, but you’ll want to verify before starting a movement swap. If you have insight to this, please comment below.

BTW: You can buy a Chinese made 2824 clone here for $45 or an original one here for about $210.

See for yourself how close it can get:

I am curious why no mention of the the Miyota and Seiko clones?

Miyota and Seiko don’t make clone movements of the ETA 2824-2.

Seiko and Miyota use the ETA 2824-2 as a starting point but make their own improvements or variations. So you can not reakly call them clones. ETA 2824 typically has 38 hr power reserve, the seiko and miyota have 40 to 42 hr power reserve.

Seiko and Miyota have never made an ETA clone.

4L25, 4L, 6L movements are not clones, but take quite a few features from swiss 2824 such as dial feet placement, 28.800bph, similarities in autowind gears…
Swiss Soprod A10 (now M100) is “based” on 4L25

Just because it has the same dial feet and beat rate does not make it “based” on anything. There is almost nothing mechanically in those movements that have any similarity to 2824 aside that it has a lever escapement which just about every mechanical watch has including other swiss in house movements. Rolex movements have 28,800 bph and the winding system they use is in just about every watch including 2824 equipped ones.

Seiko and Miyota make movements based on their own designs, and neither makes a 2824-2 clone, or anything that looks like it. The Miyota 9 Series competes with the 2824 clones in that it is thin, and beats at 28,800. It also has unidirectional automatic winding and a unique design.

Seiko has highbeat calibers for its more expensive watch lines, but doesn’t sell them to third party brands. Like Miyota/Citizen, Seiko prides itself on designing inhouse movements, and doesn’t copy Swiss designs.

And before someone mentions it, the Soprod A10-2 is absolutely not a clone of anything from ETA either.

Neither Seiko nor Miyota make clone movements, there are however several companies who make Miyota clones, the most well known is probably Dixmont Guangzhou, who makes the DG2813, A Miyota 8215 clone, almost, they’ve added a hacking function which is something a Miyota 8215 does not have. Essentially Dixmont Guangzhou is to Miyota what Sellita, or perhaps Seagull is to ETA. They’ve improved upon the design although build quality is debatable, which is why I won’t buy either, the Miyota due to it not having a hacking feature and DG, or any other of a half dozen or more clones… Read more »

While derived from the Miyota 82xx series, the DG2813 and Sea-Gull ST16 & ST17 are NOT Miyota clones. They use the same basic architecture, but their back plates in no way resemble the Miyotas. One look and any novice watch person can tell the difference.

The DG2813 has some clone-like brethren, including the Nanning NN2813, and the Beijing Watch Factory SB11, SB12 and B16ZR.

They use both ETA and Sellita movements. Which one you get is luck of the draw.

I would also add the Landeron 24 (nee DEPA Swiss), which like the Valanron VAL-24, uses Sea-Gull 2130 ebauches and then adds 51% Swiss value.

“The MV285 movement is made by the Swiss manufacturer Landeron (Landeron24 base)”

It’s hard to consider this an in-house movement, when all that was involved was a custom engraved rotor. By that logic, Invicta should claim their NH35s are in-house calibers as well.

Just wondering if the 2824-2 ETA and 3135 ETA are similar in size?. I can’t find any information regarding the size for both. I would like to use both or either for a Rolex Submariner 116610. Thank You

There is no such thing as a ETA 3135. And why would you want to put an ETA 2824-2 in a Rolex Submariner?

I think it’s great now that patient protection is no longer in play. Watch makers are no longer captive to Swatch and can purchase 2824 clones/copies from other reputable manufacturers with assurance of getting a quality piece. We will see numerous improvements and variations to this industry workhorse in the coming years and that will be good for everyone…

A clone is a clone, it doesn’t matter if it’s a “cheap” Chinese clone, it’s still a clone. From the pictures it looks like all the other clones, even the expensive Swiss clones. So what’s your point? And what’s a pendullum mod?

As a matter of fact, ETA itself has placed their own movements ‘out of the main selling market share position as the no. 1’ by getting ‘toffy-nosed’ and not wanting to sell their calibers to other than Swatch Group watchmakers.

The saying that ‘Pride comes before the Fall’ isn’t a vain one for ETA. Hence their demise in the mainstream calibers market. Selitta and the other brands with the similar movements in their watches are no. 1 now. Due to ETA’s own stupidity.

“Through a series of mergers, ETA has become the largest manufacturer of Swiss watch movements and controls a virtual monopoly over their production and supply. ETA has undergone several Swiss government investigations due to its market position. To resolve the concerns of Swiss government regulators, ETA has entered into an agreement that governs certain business practices.” –Wikipedia

It appears that until further notice, ETA will only be supplying movements to the brands within the Swatch Group.
