The Miyota caliber 9015 is a 24 jewel automatic movement. It is made in Japan and was first introduced in 2009. This movement is found in many new microbrand watches because it is easily obtainable, has a desirable hacking function, and considered a workhorse movement.

Accuracy:

Citizen (Miyota) claims the accuracy of the caliber 9015 to be within -10~+30 seconds per day.

The mainspring becomes fully winded by rotating the ratchet wheel 7.5 times (turning the crown 40 times)

Microbrands:

The caliber 9015 is featured in many microbrand watches such as the Marc & Sons Pilot watch. Here is what they have to say about it:

The caliber 9015, which was presented for the first time in 2009, is a revolutionary development of the 8215 caliber. Equipped with a ball bearing rotor, a second stop and a date with a quick-change circuit, this new plant works very precisely with 28,800 half oscillations per hour. The range deviation is indicated as -10 to +30 seconds per day. According to experience, however, the work runs much more precisely, in some cases with a deviation in the single-digit second range. Furthermore, the movement has a shock absorber, a Swiss anchoring inhibitor and a manual hoist. The reserve is 42 hours. The movement is a technical masterpiece due to its low overall height of only 3.9 mm.

Replacement Prices:

Replacement prices were found online in the $100.00 range. Click here to order a replacement Miyota 9015 movement for your watch.

I have this movement in at least 3 of my watches. It is cheaper than a Swiss ETA so a lot of smaller watch manufacturers are using it. My experience is so far so good. I like how they decorated the one in the picture.

Supposedly they are in the Chinese brand Watchstar. I don’t know much about the brand but they are only half as ugly as most Chinese watches and cost about $200.

Yes nh35 is very basic low end Seiko movement, more comparable to the miyota 8215.

I have several of both 9015 and Seiko NH35. Both are accurate I really cant tell the difference besides 28.8 sweep of the miyota and the 21.6 for the seiko. I also own 2 6R15’s from Seiko and a 9012 miyota they both seem to be a tad more accurate…

Further, reports of widely available, low-cost, and current Japanese movements from Miyota, Seiko, and Orient indicates rather better performance than would be expected by their spec sheets.

Excellent Hi-beat movement, compared to the low-beat Seiko 6r15, a smoother movement and less expensive too. And it does not have the hand-winding issues of the ETA-2824 and is 1mm thinner. Found in Citizen, Deep Blue, Zelos, Makara, Maratac, Obris-Morgan, Tempest, Helson and NTH brands.

I have a derived movement, the Miyota caliber 9022 in the Portsea from Melbourne Watch Company. I’d say the accuracy is indeed between -10 and +30 seconds. It’s however quite noisy and in a direct comparison with the 6R15 (in my SARB065) seemed a tad more accurate.

I have watches with 4R36/NH36 , ETA2824, and 9015. The Steinhart OVM with 2824 is about +3-4 per day, my NTH Amphion with 9015 is +10 every morning. My ETA is more accurate, but hand winding feels like I’m going to snap the crown off from the resistance! The 9015 is not as accurate, much much louder, however I like it better. It winds smooth and doesn’t feel fragile.

buy a timegrapher and regulate it, should easily get it to around 0 seconds per day. The rotor is a bit noisy but only if you move the watch and hold it up to your ear, in general use you can’t hear it anyway

I tend to dial/regulate my watches so they run on wrist to run -1/0/+1 second. I adjust the 5 positions so there no position runs late no matter how much my reference position CH runs. Then I carry the watch for a few days andI record the results. If needed I add or remove the speed. That’s how I do it. From my 4 NH35s I have two of them running that -1/+1 second where I had a luck that one did not need adjusting. My PT500 after being adjusted runs also -1/+1 second. I’d say with higj beat movement… Read more »

This movement is placed inside a custom made watch from Merkur. Timed over a 72hr period with 0 spd deviation. I don’t hear the rotor spinning unless I put my ear to the watch. Doesn’t seem to “helicopter” like my Valjoux 7750’s. Overall very happy with the movement.

So I have a watch (Tisell Pilot) with this movement (according to the markings on the rotor). There is no day or date on my watch, however, and I can only pull out the crown to one position, suggesting that there is no date complication on mine. Is it possible that my movement is a 90s5 fitted with a 9015 rotor, or can the 9015 be easily modified to remove the date complication.

Anybody know if the hands on an 821A are a direct fit for the Miyota 9015? I’d love to do a little movement upgrade on one of my watches, but I don’t want to shop for new hands. I’d love to keep the rotor from the 821A too, so I’d be curious to find out if I could swap that around too. I guess I’ll find out…

I think the hands are exactly the same (152/100/17) but you want to check the 821A post on this site. The thing that stands out immediately would be the different rotor screw setup. The 9015 has 3 screws but the 8215 has one screw. Not sure how that would work.

Update on my comment of last year re Armida A2 with the Miyota 9015 engine. Don’t need to wind anymore, the watch is now consistently -1.5 to 2 seconds per twelve hour day and, face up at night, it recovers this loss and sometimes goes .5 to 1 seconds ahead. At the time I didn’t know that best practice with new automatics is to do full manual wind. The Armida A2 is an excellent homage to the Rolex 5517 SubMar but if you’d like an original design diver with same calibre have a look at Helson Watch. I say engine… Read more »

this movement is super over rated for what it really is, its a low cost cheaply finished movement that costs less then $10 to make, its a slap to the face because there are watch companies using this movement in thousand dollar watches. Like the Autodromo group b $975 for a cheap Japanese movement and a $3 painted dial, idk about you guys but thats a slap to the face.

What makes you think an ETA 2824 doesn’t cost $10 to make? Are you on the board of ETA with internal financial info that no one else is privy to? Why does the cost to manufacture mean that a movement is shit? Could it be that the Japanese manufacturers have perfected the process and are able to be more efficient? Haven’t you seen the low grade ETAs? They look like rubbish and they are used in watches that cost $3000. Then they are put inside completely Chinese cases with Chinese dials, Chinese hands, Chinese crystals, Chinese bands, Chinese everything and… Read more »

Yea true, but in my humble opinion the miyota doesn’t hold a candle to the eta even if your dumb enough to pay 3000 for a Chinese made watch then thats up to you, but what is true is the fact that the miyotas quality isn’t even on par with etas most basic movements. Looking at the overall finish, tool paths, luster and surface finishing as well as edge definition on any of the the miyota movements it is easy to tell the miyota is a poorly machined movement designed to just exist, unlike etas movements in which the overall… Read more »

You said you seen Miyota 9015 watches for under $100, then the next sentence you say watches with the Miyota 9015 are overpriced junk. That can be said about any watch with any movement. With that rationale, there less than $400 ETA watches on Kickstarter that must be junk too because of the low price. I have watches with Miyota and with ETA, they run the same. The ETA might look better but the watches I have with it are covered up so no added value in… Read more »

GRAND Seiko is where Seiko destroys Citizen in Automatics. Which the 9015 is not or ever will pretend to be.
For the money, cheap citizen/miyota movements blast cheap seiko movements on precision AND accuracy.

This is an interesting thread, but FWIW the Autodromo Group B is only $875 and has a lot to offer aside from the movement. Firstly, they can demand a premium because they are serving a specific market and not just people interested in watches like us. The case uses titanium and steel in a two part build. Sapphire crystal. Bracelet that I haven’t seen before as well as dial. It includes a handmade aluminum case. I am willing to pay $875 for all of that and happy to have it with a Miyota 9015 automatic. Now, I don’t know much… Read more »

I have a Richard Le Grand Odysea 3 and it runs amazingly accurate, you can ‘cheat’ by storing it dial or crown down when not in use (loses a couple of seconds per day) or dial up gains around 3 seconds. Wearing it you usually get between -1/+1 second, with 0 seconds being very common.
I also own a Phoibos with the same movement, unfortunately it gained around 11 seconds a day for the first week. Amplitude and beat error were fantastic, so I adjusted the rate today. It should now run way better.
