Tudor Pelagos FXD GMT (Ref: M2542G247NU-0002) (Add your watch to the comments below…)

The Tudor caliber MT5652-U is an automatic “true” GMT movement found in the Pelagos FXD GMT. “FXD” on this models refers to its “fixed” lug bars.

In Tudor’s own words:

“This movement offers the general look and feel of TUDOR Manufacture Calibres with dedicated sun laser design and bears the “Master Chronometer” mention on its bridges, emphasising its superior performance. Its monobloc rotor is made of tungsten. It is openworked and features the laser radial grooving and sand-blasted details distinctive to TUDOR Master Chronometer calibers. A combination of finishings can be found on the bridges as well.”

The MT5652-U is produced by Tudor’s manufacturing partner Kenissi Manufacture, while complete watches are assembled and tested at the TUDOR Manufacture in Le Locle, Switzerland.

MT5652-U VS MT5652:

The -U version of the MT5652 indicates that the movement is METAS certified in addition to COSC certification. The non-U version (found in the Black Bay GMT or Black Bay Pro) is only COSC and not METAS certified.

Accuracy:

The MT5652-U carries a METAS certification which implies that fully assembled watches have been tuned to be accurate within 0 to + 5 seconds per day. This testing/certification is in addition to the COSC certification which gives an allowance of -4 to +6 seconds per day (raw movement, uncased). Learn more about METAS Certification here.

Interesting Note: Even in the case of COSC-only calibers, Tudor has their own standards of -2 to + 4 seconds/day (basically a 6 second rule), for fully cased watches.

The MT5652-U does not have the -U engraved on the movement. Instead, it is signed: MT5652 MASTER CHRONOMETER

Power Reserve:

You may see other watch publications incorrectly rate the MT5652-U at 70 hours, but Tudor themselves have gone on the record to state that this calibre has a power reserve of 65 hours.

The 65 hour power reserve means the MT5652-U is yet another movement that Tudor strangely advertises as “weekend-proof”. As Tudor describes it:

“This enables the wearer to take the watch off on a Friday evening and put it back on again on Monday morning without having to wind or reset it.”

Editor’s Commentary: It is baffling that a watch brand would encourage their customers not to wear their almost $5,000 luxury tool watch on the weekends. It seems that for most collectors who are able to afford a Tudor Pelagos FXD, the perfect time to wear it would be on the weekend – assuming that the individual has a typical office job requiring them to wear a more appropriate watch during the week. Of course, this is just general stereotyping and not taking into account the folks who have non-traditional jobs or people who are comfortable wearing a green fabric strap aviator’s tool watch under the cuff of a dress shirt. Either way, it’s still strange when a watch brand’s selling point is to take the watch off for the most enjoyable part of your week.
