Corgeut Calburn Courborne “Moon Phase” (Add your watches to the comments below…) |
The Sea-Gull caliber TY2872 / ST-1655 is an automatic movement with a triple-date calendar complication, as well as a day/night indicator (often misrepresented as a moonphase indicator) and pointer style 24 hour indicator.
This calibre is part of Seagull’s ST16 family of movements, with framework based on the Miyota 8200 series (8215) with modules for the calendar system. It also utilizes a Seiko Magic Lever style bi-directional winding mechanism. (So, yeah, with watch designs based on Patek, movement framework based on Miyota/Citizen, winding based on Seiko, there’s a whole lot of borrowed IP here lol.)
Some of the topics covered in this caliber listing:
How to set the date?
- Date – Bottom pusher on the right side
- Day – Bottom pusher on the left
- Month – Top pusher on the right
- Year – Top pusher on the left
The year only goes to 2033.
The faux moonphase is a day/night indicator which follows the main time. The same for the 24 hour hand, it follows the main hour hand. Neither can be set independently.
Replacement Prices:
At the time of this post, replacement prices for the TY2872/ST16S5 movement were found online in the range of $38.00 USD to $48.00 USD.
Quick FAQs:
Does this movement have a moonphase indicator?
No. There is a moon image on the indicator for about 12 hours, but the other side has a sun image. It is a day/night indicator, not a proper moonphase (despite what others call it).
Watches with this movement:
This movement allows affordable watch companies (factories in China) to make homage/knockoff timepieces that resemble the $180,000 Patek Philippe Grand Complication (Ref: 5207P with caliber CH 29-535 PS Q). It also looks like that Breitling Premier B25 Datora 42 (caliber B25). Those two pieces are chronograph watches, and the Seagull is a faux chronograph (it has the buttons, but they control the calendar).
