The Miyota caliber 8217 is from the affordable 8 Series family of what Miyota refers to as “Standard Automatics”. Caliber 8217 is based off of 8215/821A framework with the addition of a 24 hour hand at 9:00.

What differentiates this caliber?

Aside from the hours/minutes/central seconds and date, this movement has a 24 hour subdial at 9:00.

Accuracy:

Miyota claims that the caliber 8217 offers accuracy of -20 ~ +40 seconds per day.

Citizen/Miyota:

Another movement that is similar is the Citizen caliber 4166.

Here is the 26mm Miyota 8217 movement in a 46mm Szanto Big Aviator watch:

Have you ever known a more versatile and widely used movement then the Miyota caliber by Citizen? There are so many watches using this movement it seems like the default movement for any watchmaker creating an accurate, reliable, and super affordable timepiece.

I just bought Ingersol I02802 the Apsley and it is equipped with this movement from Miyota cal. 8217 after three days on my hand (also overnight) it gained 18 secs. against the atomic watch – amazing.

I also have an Ingersoll but it has a Chinese Seagull style automatic movement. I didn’t know you could get a Miyota in an Ingersoll. The will totally take their brand to the next level imho.

I have the Bering 16243-462 with this movement only a 15sec gain in a 48 hr period and power reserve is accurate as well 41 has last time I left the watch without moving it.

My Boldr Wayfarer Khaki uses this movement. The rotor’s movement is very audible in daily life. It may bother some, but for me it adds a bit of character and serves as a reminder that I’m wearing a very sophisticated piece of machinery on my wrist.

I have a Iron Annie Pilotwatch from Pointtec made in Ruhla (Germany) with this movement and I love it. Single negative point is if I do not use it the time difference increases by 15 sec/day if I wear it the difference might be about 2 sec/day. So the watch wants to be weared otherwise its revenge is huge.

I just bought a Boldr Venture titanium sapphire, the noise is positive feedback when while winding and I like the watch for many reasons. Adding a date cyclops tho.

Just purchased an Areojet by Bulova with ths movemet. There are the Letters; CWMJ inscribed on the rocker after MITOYA JAPAN. What do these represent?

Search is your friend: “You may see the manufacturer’s stock images with the letters CWMJ instead of the caliber number. This abbreviation stands for: Citizen Watch Manufacturing Co. Japan.” https://calibercorner.com/miyota-caliber-8n24/ .

Italian ‘Tecnotempo’ uses this movement in their ‘Dynamic Solar System’ model. The dial shows the sun in its center, with the hour- and minute-hand like sunrays. Surrounding the sun are 7 planets that turn with the seconds and the 24-hour sub-dial at 9 o’clock has the 8th planet, Earth, in its center that rotates with the 24 hours. This scene is further enhanced with a band of white asteroids (also moving with the planets). Is that a crazy concept? Not really cheap, this watch, but well executed.

I had a Miyota 8215 in a Pagani Design watch. For 3 weeks it gained only 2 seconds when brand new. Then it started to gain 6 seconds a day. I didn’t have the watch long. I sold it to get a Luminox 8895 (the black with red accents on the bezel and Dial w/ a sapphire crystal) The only thing wrong with the Luminox was a very cheap bezel. The Pagani Design was of very good quality which I didn’t expect in a $90 watch. I’ll take a Miyota any day over an NH35 even if it doesn’t hack.… Read more »
