The Sellita caliber SW300-1 is a slim automatic watch movement, Swiss made with 25 jewels. This caliber is the main competitor and clone of the ETA caliber 2892-A2. Many reputable watch companies are using this movement as an alternative to the ETA mechanism due to it being more economical and readily available – and as of 2020, it also offers more power reserve than the ETA.

You may have seen this movement written as the SW-300 but according to Sellita, the correct way to spell this caliber number is SW300 without a hyphen between SW and 300.

Sellita caliber SW300

SW300-1 a VS SW300-1 b:

Generally when you see the caliber number SW300-1 it will be in reference to a 3-hand movement with a date at 3:00, but there is also a No Date version of the SW300-1. The no date version is a real no date without a phantom date position. Sellita officially identifies these as SW300-1 a (date) and SW300-1 b (no date).

Editor’s gripe: This doesn’t seem like the best way to handle caliber designations, but if you’ve spent enough time on this site then you will already know that I don’t like how most watch movement manufacturers and brands handle their caliber numbering. A better way would be to reference the no date version as SW300-1-ND, or have a totally different number such as SW301-1. Some brands use the “SW300-1 a” without a date cutout on the dial, meaning you’d have a no date watch but still with an “SW300-1 a” caliber.

SW300 Family:

There are technically two versions of the SW300-1:

SW300-1 a – This is the most common variation. It has a date at 3:00.

SW300-1 b – This is a no-date version of the SW300-1. It is a true no-date, meaning that the calendar components are completely removed without any phantom date position.

The SW300-1 is the base calibre of the SW300 family. There are two other variations in this family of Sellita movements:

SW200-1 VS SW300-1:

While the SW200-1 and SW300-1 share many similarities, they are not the same. The biggest difference between the two, as pointed out in the Sellita catalog, is that the SW300-1 is a 1mm slimmer movement. The SW300-1 is 3.6mm thick and the SW200-1 is 4.6mm thick. This makes the SW300-1 a preferred choice for thinner models such as higher end dress watches.

SW300-1 VS SW300-2:

At the time of this post, there is no such thing as the SW300-2. If Sellita makes any major changes to the SW300-1, they may designate the updated movement as SW300-2 to mark an evolution of the SW300-1.

Replacement Prices:

At the time of this post, replacement prices were found online for around $280.00 USD.

If you know of other watch brands with their own caliber designation, but using the SW300-1 to power the watch, please comment below or submit it here.

This caliber is used by Montblanc watch company as a base for its caliber mb24.09. So it is used in TimeWalker Automatic series, e.x. models 110337, 110340, 112532 etc.

Does anybody know how many turns of crown fully wind the mainspring?

71 to 100 winds of the crown according to the Sellita data sheet.

Hello I love your website and I thank you for it. Can you help me with one thing regarding the SW300 movement? What is the winding direction of the rotor? Does it wind both ways like my Seikos? I’m asking because I want to put my new watch on a watch winder. Thank you in advance!

I have this in my IWC portofino, the ticking is louder than the ticking of my hamilton eta 2824-2. The date jumps reliably at 6 minutes before 12 whereas my hamilton jumps reliably at 2 minutes before 12.My IWC runs at 3+ seconds per day. I can recommend it but beware of the louder ticking. I did not hear it but my girlfriend noticed immediately

I agree. It keeps great time, unless I take it off more than about 24 hours. A little disappointed in power reserve but, otherwise accurate.

Mine does/did that over a period of a week. I find it does not wind the main spring very well. I’m fairly sedentary, but wear the watch 24/7 except gardening, and, after I took it off to do some gardening for 4 hours, it had stopped an hour and a half ago. I don’t know if this is my lifestyle. I’ve now fully hand wound the watch and have it sitting to see when it stops. So far, still going after 24hrs, so I’m thinking it’s likely me not the watch.

Hello everyone. I have a Hubolt classic fusion 45mm. When I proceed with the hacking sequence, the minute hand moves slightly. I wonder if it a defect or common with the SW300a.

Long time lurker and thread follower, first time caller but I’ll try my best to answer. Do you mean when you pull the crown out to set the time the minute hand moves slightly? I think you just have to be more careful. Hacking it means the hands can move because you can set it. The minute hand moves easier then the hour hand.

Yes, I pull out the crown to set time, but min. Hand moves slightly each time. Other watches I have does not move like that.

I’ve heard that this is true. However, I have also heard that the date wheel from the 2892-A2 would not work with the SW300-1. Instead, the 2824 date wheel would work with the SW300-1.

Do you know if this is true?

The Titanium Aeroscope also uses this as a base caliber for its chronograph and 3 hand movements and upgrades the jewel count to I believe 42 or 43 jewels in its JR66 movement. Not bad Jean Richard did an excellent job on these models really upped their game on these Titanium masterpieces.

After sending my original issue Steinhart Ocean 500 Titanium (Soprod A10 movement) in for repairs for the third time, Steinhart replaced the movement with an SW300-1 Premium (not sure about the “Premium” designation). I remember the first batch was delayed because of quality issues and I’ve never had anything but problems with it. It’s a beautiful watch so I’m glad I sent it in one more time.

Steinhart did the same for me. I believe it is an elabore grade with Steinhart’s custom golden rotor, which is why it has the “Premium” designation.

I have one of these in a Glycine. It gains about +1/d, if that. If I let it wind out for a longer than usual, it will start nibbling back those seconds. The practical upshot is that I don’t even think about sync-ing it for weeks. It’s the most stable, accurate movement I’ve ever seen, and a definite keeper.
