The ETA caliber 2893-2 is part of the Mecaline Specialities line of ETA movements. This caliber is available in different grades and can be supplied by ETA with a Chronometer rating. The 2893-2 is very similar to the ETA 2892-A2 except that it has a modular GMT complication. Official ETA tech sheets were found dated as far back as 2002, showing that this movement has been in production for at least that long. The example in the photos is from a Sinn 857 S UTC.

Setting the GMT Hand:

The 24 hour GMT hand sets independently. Unscrew crown and pull to position I, turning forward/clockwise will adjust the GMT hand by one hour increments. Turning the crown backwards/counter-clockwise will adjust the date. This is very convenient because you can adjust the GMT hand without hacking (stopping) the movement. For GMTs that require hacking the movement to adjust the GMT hand, it also requires readjusting the time.

Caliber Number Location:

On genuine ETA 2893-2 movements, the caliber number is located on the plate beneath the balance wheel. The ETA shield logo is also present. To the left is an origin/date code with a sequence of letters and numbers. On the example movement pictured here the code is: V8DJ6. The V8 code indicates that the movement was produced in Switzerland.

2893-2 Image Gallery:

Watch brands using this movement as a base caliber:

Breitling uses a COSC grade ETA 2893-2 as a base for their Breitling caliber 32 (aka B32). If you know of any other brands that apply their own caliber number to the 2893-2, please comment below.

I am really enjoying my new Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT Vintage Premium. Caliber setting is much more user friendly than my father’s late 1950s GMT Master 1. (Love the GMT Master but just cannot justify wearing the family heirloom every day.)

As for accuracy – while I have 2824-2s that all keep around 2.5-4 seconds a day in normal wear and expected around that from this watch, the Airman’s 2893-2 keeps an average of just three quarters of a second a day.

The steinhart Ocean One GMT tatnium has the ETA 2893-2 movement, it is very accurate and keeps dual time accuarately, from what I have read, it is rated as a 4 hz. watch movement, meaning it is rated as a 28k watch, beaking down any given 1 second (to 1/8 of a second) that is fast as most watch such as a seiko presage is only 3kz. thus I believe if Omega uses it, so as Sinn you should not have any problems with this movement, great watch movement boardering on chronometer ratings.

I think that my Breitling Colt GMT has this movement. The GMT hand is out of alignment by about 30 minutes and apparently needs to be adjusted by a watchmaker. This seems to be a common problem with this movement based on various postings that I found with a Google search. I wonder why the GMT hand goes out of alignment for so many owners?

There is something with the GMT hands on the ETA and Sellita 4 hand movements. I own both and both GMT hands misaligned. Both keep great time. Sooner or later someone will reveal the proper cause and correction. For now I adjust the bezel to read properly. Cheers

I have the Colt GMT and the GMT hand appears to be accurate AFAICT. The watch maintains about 4.5s/day accuracy if I keep it wound every day, otherwise about 6 seconds.

My Fortis GMT has this movement. I actually own 2. Both have been serviced twice. The 3rd service, with a new watchmaker, came back with the GMT hand about 20 minutes off on the 1st one he finished. Took it back and was told he had to pull the hands off and reinstall in the correct position. The 2nd he got correct.

Same issue on my Sinn 857 UTC. Watch Buys was no help. Beautiful but ultimately unreliable watch that falls short of stated accuracy and power reserve claims. Be advised that Watch Buys would not post my honest and balanced review and that their service was expensive and took many months.

Squale Tropic GMT has the 2893.
Which type of GMT do you want? There are 2 basic types.

Quickset 12 hour hand (Rolex,Seiko,Omega,Alpina)
Quickset 24 hour hand (all ETA-2893 incl. C.Ward, Squale, Steinhart and Parnis)

Pilots, sailors, Ship Captains, globetrotting tourists and world travelers prefer 12 hour hand quickset to change timezones without stopping the movement.
Desk drivers prefer 24 hour hand quickset to set for whatever zone they track or speak with by phone.

Alpina Alpiner GMT 4 has a modified 2893 with an added module to convert to 12H quickset.

Decorated ETA 2893-2 Movement in my new Deep Blue Rescue GMT Batman. Keeping great time as +1 sec/day. Only con so far, rotor is loud when watch is unwound. After manual wind and on the arm for a day the rotor can still be heard but much less noticeable. By the way, this Deep Blue is an EXCELLENT value in my opinion.

I have a 30 year old Bulova Seville with an unserviced ETA 2834-2 movement. The watch has been used very hard for all those years yet now gains less than 2 seconds in 5 days. Even my highly tuned Rolex Datejust is only within 3 second per day. I can’t believe how robust and accurate some ETA movements can be.

Glycine Airman 42 (GL0069 model). Glycine calls it’s GL293 movement, although im unsure exactly how they modify it. So far it’s lost about 1 second per day out of the box, definitely can’t complain. And setting the GMT hand separate of normal time is the biggest plus.

Glycine Airman 17 SPHAIR, the 46mm one. I don’t normally approve of a smaller movement in an ‘oversize’ watch, but the oversize is mostly taken up with the bezel, and the spacer the’ve put in appears to be a lovely bit of machined stainless rather than plastic. It’s a little over a year old and gains 2.3 secs a day. (The bezel insert is matte black rubber, with the numbers moulded into it, but unpainted, so it’s all matte black. After six months I decided it looked really miserable and I filled my numbers with white and it is now… Read more »

I bought a B&R V2 93 GMT just a few days ago with this movement. The GMT hand ran fine all night but then started running fast the following afternoon. It ended up showing 02:00 at 9pm. Reset it and the same happened the next day. Maybe something to do with friction with the hour hand dragging it along? Anyway, the retailer is going to replace it next week so hopefully was just a one off and I´ll be able to enjoy it soon.
