The Sea-Gull caliber ST1902 is a mechanical hand-wound chronograph movement. This caliber is known to be based off of the Venus caliber 175. At one point a legend was circulating around the internet claiming that this series of movements is not only based on Venus calibers, but also manufactured on the same machines. If anyone has actual proof of this claim, please share in the comments below.

6:00 Subdial:

This movement is essentially a 2 subdial chronograph. The 6:00 subdial on the caliber ST1902 is often simply listed as a 12 hour subdial, causing confusion about the functionality. This is not a 12 hour totalizer subdial for the chronograph complication. It is a 12 hour hand that matches the main central hour hand.

Is ST1902 the same as ST19?

You may see the caliber number for this movement shortened to just ST19. This is accurate as the base caliber number, but it is not accurate when talking specifically about the ST1902. With ST19XX, the last two digits indicate different versions or complications added to the base ST19 (ST1901).

ST1902 VS TY2902:

As is common with watch calibers of Chinese origin, there is confusion with the caliber number system. The caliber ST1902 is the same as TY1902.

Replacement Prices:

At the time of this post, replacement prices for the Seagull caliber ST1902 were found online for around $110.00 USD.

I had a watch with this and I got rid of it. It looks nice on the backside but there are better variations of the ST19 IMHO. I never understand this movement and the hand at 6:00? It doesnt do anything, it doesnt even tell the 24 hour time or a second time. Is it just a decoration?

Chinese movements are known for having extra functions that have no purpose. Swiss would never put a hand that does nothing.

No? How about Longines, using a closed date window on its retrograde military watch as many other Watchmakers do for some models. Nothing wrong with that idea. It does creates a ghost position for the Crown, yes. Perhaps we should skip the idea that Chinese craftmanship is …crap?

Chinese craftsmanship is crap compared to Swiss or German. Now, i will say they have improved significantly but they are not on the level of other manufacturers in Europe.

The Venus 17x family had several variants, and I believe Sea-Gull just updated and copied the existing variants.

Can you fit a st1902 into a copy speedmaster ? And where can you buy the movement ring

Anything is possible but the subdials aren’t all real chronograph subdials. Just make a cool watch why copy one?

My watch is a replica speedmaster automatic and the dials do nothing. That is why i would like to fit a st1902 movement because its hand wind and the stop watch will work.

If it is the same as the Venus 175 it would be 52 degrees

I was wondering, seeing as this is the Venus 175 in everything but name, I have a NOS Sekonda 3017 dial and wondered if the dial would fit this as the dial is fitment for a Venus 150 aka the Strela. Anyone know?

I got my first true mechanical chronograph, an Alpha 1993 Daytona “panda” and wow it does not disappoint, esp with the display caseback and I am just sitting here watching all the little extra mechanisms do their thing.

On mine the 6 subdial is a true 24hr clock, a bit pointless on any watch really as all you have to do is add or subtract 12 hours and spending time in the army its how you read time anyway but its a feature that does show AM or PM if nothing else.

Does anyone know where to find some compatible “balance wheels” or “balance wheel assemblies” for such ST19 ?

Thank you for your answer …

i was wondering if some ST16 / ST25 balance wheels (not the full assembly, but the wheel and spring) could be compatible, since i suspect the same origin for some of them (from pictures) + the fact that seagull has an incabloc system that was not proposed on the venus 175 : the reedition may have taken parts from other movements that are standalone and not copies from others (i thus suspect those two but possibly other could be …)

Did someone tried the ST16/ST25 balance swap ? with or without success ??

Esslinger might have some Seagull parts actually. Even the Seagull factories themselves might sell you the part(s). Sometimes even as a courtesy to their clientèle.

With ‘sometimes even as a courtesy to their clientèle’, I meant saying that sometimes they give it even for free as a courtesy to their clients/consumers.

Dear Jean, unless you may have a contact (?), i already tried by email and the seagull factory contacts i have from their website did not sell balance parts even in quantities (which is a common problem). CousinUK has some winding stems only. I also buy broken watches/movements to have some parts, but now i’m with a -1 balance (and a -1 click spring, which is more easily fixable if i take time to manualy build a new one …)

What proof do you have that this movement is NOT made with Swiss cooperation? Russia bought the rights to this movement and also the Valjoux 7733 from Switzerland and manufactured them as as various 3000 Calibers of Poljot. This was just one of several movements licensed from Switzerland by Russia. The upgrade of this movement to high beat took place in Russia as the Venus 175 was 18,000. Even with help from Russia, it’s hard to conceive that China could manufacture this movement without Swiss assistance. As for the machinery used, that’s an open question.

I have two watches with this movement, 1963 and a Sugess 50 fathom homage. Both are running within 10 sec a day and has not missed a beat. Love the action of the chronograph.

I assembled Speedmaster homage with that movement a couple weeks ago and tonight I am up to 52 hours since fullly wound. Quite pleasantly surprised.

Can I ask what case you used for that? I’m struggling to find cases for anything other than NH movements, I did wonder if you could get away with a case thats listed for a VK63 but I wasnt sure if the dimentions or pusher placements would work on something like this.

Question: What are actual experiences about reliability? I have a few ST19 watches in a shopping cart (1963, Speedy and other homages), but the calibre seems to run into frequent(?) problems with the column-wheel and/or levers bumping off alignment, which kills the chronograph functions. Simple fix for a watchmaker, but a pricey repair! Is this exaggerated or a real and likely failure hazard? The candidate watches are just too neat to pass, well made, at 1/10th the price of low end Swiss chronograph watches. It is interesting and worth mentioning, that the lower end “affordable” Swiss watches up to 2… Read more »

Too early to report anything about reliability given that I’ve only owned my ST1902-based Phylida SP-31 for a couple of days but I can state this: 1) this caliber does feel (yes feel) a bit weak/fragile. Why? Because of the push buttons and observations of the movement through the glass caseback. 2) the start/stop push button gives a very good/very firm clic on the finger on starting and stopping there chronograph but the double crunching fed back from the column wheel on restarting the chronograph does feel a bit strange. 3) there is absolutely no clic feeling on pushing on… Read more »

Well, after just a couple of month, the reset lever broke; maybe it was poorly manufactured hence why resetting the chrono felt so weak at the push button. Anyway, I contacted the Phylida seller and he’s sending me the necessary replacement part. Very glad about this because I keep reading that getting parts for ST19 movements from Seagull is mission impossible. Other than that, it’s been a great movement so far, very accurate and excellent power reserve well over 52hrs, even with chronograph running permanently.
