The Seiko caliber V157 (actually marked V157A) is found in some Seiko solar-powered watches, including the exclusive Street Series Solar Divers. This caliber is part of the Seiko Watch Corporation V family/series of solar powered movements.

V157 VS V157A:

The movement in your timepiece may actually be signed with the caliber number V157A. As with most (if not all) Seiko movements, the trailing letter indicates the evolution or change-log of the movement, starting with A as the first release. Therefore, V157 is the same as V157A. As of this post, there is not a V157B, V157C, and so on.

V157 VS V158:

There is a similar Seiko caliber V158, with the main difference being that the V158 has a day/date window at 3:00, and the V157 only displays the date at 3:00.

Accuracy:

Seiko claims that the caliber V157 will maintain accuracy of +/- 15 seconds per month at normal operating temperatures of about 5C to 35C (41F – 140F).

Battery Change:

The caliber V157 is a solar powered watch with a manganese titanium-lithium rechargeable capacitor. It is not a normal battery. The number is MT920, or more specifically: 302324Y. Order one here

Charging Times:

The chart below shows how long different lights sources can take to fully charge the cell in the V157. This ranges from 120 hours to 9 hours of constant light source. A full charge can last up to 10 months.

Interesting Note:

Although there is an instruction manual for dive watches with caliber V157 or V158, there is also another instruction manual that combines the following calibers: V110, V111, V114, V115, V116, V137, V145, V147, V157, V158, V181, V182, and V187.

Mine’s running within +15 seconds per month but there must be a bit of play in the gear train as it sometimes hits the indices and sometimes doesn’t. (Seiko Street Tuna SNE535P1)

It’s not a “capacitor”, it’s a rechargeable *BATTERY*. I wish you’d get the technical terminology correct. Capacitors are inherently *NOT* rechargeable, nor are they long-term energy storage devices. Sheesh!! Seeing this misuse of the term is like hearing fingernails screeching across a blackboard at 150 dB.

Your comment is like fingernails on a blackboard. In solar powered watches, the rechargeable battery you refer to is called a capacitor. Literally the first sentence on the Wikipedia page for capacitor is: A capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy in an electric field. Search 302324Y and see it’s called a capacitor not just by this site. You should email Casio and Seiko to complain. https://www.google.com/search?&q=watch+capacitor

When you’ve got a graduate degree in electronics and electrical engineering from a top ten university engineering graduate school, in addition to the highest class of FCC license requiring extensive knowledge about circuit design, the active and passive components used, their principles of operation and how they’re fabricated and constructed internally, THEN come back and DARE to lecture me about what a battery and a capacitor are. These watch movements use rechargeable BATTERIES. Period. They are NOT capacitors. I personally do not care what specious, erroneous and technically wrong stuff you found on the Internet that claims they are (It… Read more »

No one cares what who you went to, what degree you have or where the certificate you have ranks among certificate in general. Your uppity “I’m smarter and better than you” attitude is what is like fingernails on a blackboard in this whole situation. Nothing else. A$$hole.

I believe learning to write proper English should be a requirement to earning a graduate degree. Don’t you agree, Mr. “When you GOT a graduate degree…”

You’re right. They don’t want to use the word “battery” for rechargeable battery because these watches are “eco friendly “ so they don’t use batteries, but they use a “capacitor”. I always thought the same thing, it’s a recharge able battery like a Tesla

This V157 movement uses a Panasonic MT920 rechargeable Lithium BATTERY with a specific set of contacts welded to it for use in the V157 movement. This is the most common rechargeable BATTERY used in kinetic and solar watch movements. Variants are made with the MT920 with different shape contacts welded to them to make contact with electrical pads on circuit boards in specific movements.

There’s no such thing as a “rechargeable Lithium capacitor”. Doesn’t exist. Never has.

A ‘battery’ is a series of cells ( or guns). A ‘cell’ in this context stores electrical energy for an indeterminate period time, be that short bursts like a capacitor ( wallop if you touch one! lol), or loooonger like a lithium ion or whatever you like.

EEE engineer here. Technology is evolving. Knowledge is power. If you do not know, just admit you do not know. Even having a Harvard PhD in Electronics does not guarantee you know everything about batteries or the whole universe. Be humble. most importantly, do not be a clown. It’s a relatively newer technology as a form of hybrid capacitive battery as stated here: https://www.mdpi.com/1996-1073/15/19/7276 (Lithiated Manganese-Based Materials for Lithium-Ion Capacitor: A Review) A manganese titanium-lithium rechargeable capacitor, also known as an MTLC capacitor, is a type of energy storage device that combines features of both capacitors and batteries. It offers… Read more »

I love my V157 Divers watch. My question is I want to change the original rubber band with an bracelet type. Not sure what size to look for.

I recently purchased a Seiko Prospex SNE541 and it has 22mm width lugs. I put it on an ‘engineer’ style bracelet because I have problems with rubber-style straps against my wrist ( a fairly costly ISO-frane strap or a stock latex band will give me a rash and swelling). Such ‘engineer’ bands can be found from numerous sources on the web for around $40. I got mine from a reputable seller on the dreaded eBay and I’m happy to report that it has comfort and gives the watch a completely different look that appeals to me. The bracelet even came… Read more »

whether you like or dislike John Linds input is irrelevant. He is 100% correct. It is a battery. A spade is a spade, a shovel is a shovel, a capacitor is a capacitor and a battery is just that, a battery.

What is the Caliber number when Seiko/Epson sells it to other watch companies? I pre-ordered the momentum solar sea quartz 30 with the vs42 movement. I think it’s the same movement. Just curious if anyone knows? Thanks

My wife purchased a Seiko V157-0CA0for me several years ago. My problem is it never keeps time. It keeps stopping. I had my local Jeweler replace the capacitor and he claimed to have charged it but two days after bringing it home, it stopped again. A gentle shake got it up and running but my concern is why it keeps stopping? I’m wearing it today to see if movement will help keep it running.

If it works again after a “gentle shake” then my first suspect is that there is some muck floating around in there. Probably needs a clean of the mechanical parts. The V158 is serviceable so the V157 should be as the day display is the only difference.
