ESA caliber 940.111 is a vintage electronic quartz movement with 7 jewels. This calibre is listed as being part of the Flatline series of quartz movements.
The 940.111 example show on this page was found in a 14K gold Baume et Mercier watch (ref: 651125).
The movement is signed BM12100 / Seven 7 Jewels Unadjusted / Swiss / V8.
ESA/ETA:
Cal. 940.111 described in ESA’s own words:
“Electronic movement with quartz resonator, sweep second with hand jumping each second, with or without instantaneous date, date corrector, rotary stepping motor, stop second device, frequency 32’768 Hz.” -ESA/ETA tech sheet
This movement is signed ESA, but the official tech sheets list Fabrique D’Ebauches ETA S.A.. ESA aka Ebauches S.A produced electronic and quartz movements. ETA produced mechanical movements. Brands such as Omega, Eterna, Certina, IWC, Longines, Tissot, Zenith, and more, can be found with movements signed ESA.
Today, ETA is the sole name on both quartz and mechanical calibers (no electronic/electric). Often times, the caliber number on a discontinued ESA signed movement may be the same on an ETA movement. Either way, there is usually a modern replacement available with similar complications and dimensions.
Battery Changing:
The ESA caliber 940.111 takes a battery cell number 390. you will need to remove the screw holding the tab.
Important Note: The battery cell should be positive side down (upside-down compared to most modern quartz movements).
Putting the tab back in place is easy thanks to a notch that holds it in place while you tighten the screw back down.
940.1111 VS 940.101:
There is a similar calibre 940.101 which is the no-date version in this series.
