The ETA caliber 251.272 is a Swiss made quartz chronograph watch movement with 22 jewels.

Official documentation for this caliber was found dated as early as October 2007, however, there are watches that were produced as far back as 1990s with this movement. The latest updates to the technical communications were November 2012.

Replacing the Battery:

The battery in the 251.272 is a cell #394 (aka SR936SW).

There are two screws securing the battery cell strap. In the picture below, notice the right pointing arrow at the top of the strap, and the hole above that. What you want to do is gently loosen the screw, but not remove it. Using your tweezers or other tool, you can put it in the hole and swivel the strap out of the way, then pry the battery up and out of the bay. When the new battery is installed, simply swivel the strap back and tighten the screw.

Note: The bottom side of the strap is simply a fork style that slides between the movement and the screw head. This means if you loosen the bottom screw, the strap will move out of place and potentially spring into the air.

Eta 251272 Battery Replacement

Resetting the Chronograph Hand to Zero:

If the chronograph hands on your 251.272 powered watch are not resetting back to 12:00 or zero position (this is common after a battery change), than follow the easy steps below:

  1. Pull the crown out one click to date setting mode (ETA calls this position 2).
  2. Press the bottom pusher to advance the 30 minutes counter.
  3. Pull the crown out another click to time setting mode (ETA Calls this position 3).
  4. Press the top pusher to advance the central chrono seconds hand.
  5. Press the bottom pusher to advance the 1/10 second counter.
  6. Push the crown back in.

Used in CWC quartz pilot’s chronograph, the early issued one that went to the RAF and some to the Bangladeshi and also Thai, I believe, Airforces. The (very nice, I’ve got one) CWC pilot’s chrono sold by Silverman’s and now CWCwatches has a Ronda Startech all metal movement. You can tell the difference between the two watches by the chrono buttons – oval on the Silvermans’s one and round on stalks on the early issue….AND the chrono dials on the issue one are larger and placed to intrude into the 10, 2 and 6 positions; the other’s are slightly smaller… Read more »

It would help if I remembered that the Ronda powered one has a bloody calendar at 4.00, where they issue one doesn’t have one at all.

Hello, I’m wondering if I can repair mine by changing a quartz coil, if yes what should I look for? Otherwise is it just easy to change the whole movement?
Thank you very much

These movements have 4 different coils, IIRC. Two are green. Two are orange. I’m sure it’s possible to get the watch running with a new coil if you can find which one is bad, if one is indeed bad. I once bought a batch of four NOS (advertised as) movements and I think only one actually worked. The 251.272’s look like much better quality than the line of 4-jewel quartz chronos ETA is selling. That said, the G10.211 types, if they have the same register locations, etc., might be a decent replacement if you can’t find the 272. I have… Read more »

The g10 and 251 series are not compatible and interchangeable because the date on the g10 series is further away from the center of the mechanism compared to the 251 calibers, so the date would not appear in the window

I have a 90’s (?) vintage Wenger SAK chronograph that uses this movement. I replaced the movement a couple of years back and it’s still running well.

Do you know exactly which models of Sector watches use this caliber?

Reply to  calibercorner

is it known at least until what year the sector installed the 251.272 caliber, maybe that way you would find out which new series later switched to the G10 because I am not enthusiastic about the G10, I would rather bypass the models with those calibers, I am also interested in whether the hands are from the G10 series compatible with 251 series?

My chrono function quit. I thought the big second hand was catching the minute hand. Chrono hands will not reset. Is it a low battery or something more sinister?
