The Seiko caliber 3X22 is a solar-powered quartz movement. This calibre is found in various Seiko Astron GPS models such as the reissue 1969 Quartz Astron 50th Anniversary Limited Edition that was introduced in October/November 2019.

With the release of the 1969 re-edition (SBXD002), this is how Seiko describes the movement:

“A limited edition that followed the design of the first-generation Seiko Quartz Astron. Its Caliber 3X22 movement was significantly smaller and included a super smart sensor for automatic time adjustment, a high-speed time zone adjustment feature that changed to the local time zone with a simple button operation, and other advanced functions.” -Source: Turning Point for the Seiko Astron

Seiko claims the 3X22 is the world’s smallest/thinnest GPS solar movement:

“Seiko Astron’s first collection for women houses the world’s smallest GPS movement. Compared to the 7X series released in 2012, power consumption is just 25%, and the reception performance is 50% better. GPS Solar (Cal.3X22).” -Source: Reasons for choosing Seiko Astron

And also:

“The Caliber 3X series is the very latest Astron GPS Solar movement. In size, in energy efficiency and in signal reception, it demonstrates how far Seiko’s technology has come since the introduction of the 7X series in 2012. The case is less than 40 mm in diameter thanks to the reception antenna, which no longer even looks like an antenna. Its components are distributed across a single plate.” -Source same as above

Capacitor:

If your watch no longer holds its charge, it most likely needs a new capacitor. Do not try to retrofit a standard battery or incorrect capacitor in your watch.

The capacitor for the cal. 3X22 appears to be unavailable, therefore, you may have to send your watch to Seiko for a new secondary/rechargeable battery. However, when inputting “3×22” into Seiko’s service price estimator, the page states: “This caliber could not be found”.

If you have any experience with changing the capacitor in a 3X22, or sending one in for service, please comment below.
