The Shinola Argonite 5021 is assembled in USA with parts manufactured in Switzerland. The movement is based on Ronda’s caliber 5021.D.

According to the Ronda website, there are two versions of this movement: a Swiss parts version with 5 jewels and nickel plated finish, and a 10 jewel version with gold plated finish. Interestingly, the Shinola version which is made with Swiss parts, but not Swiss made, has 10 jewels.

USA Made? Wow that’s a bold statement. I thought USA made or made in USA would mean the parts were actually “made” in USA?

That’s the big trend these days… referring to every watch sold by an American based watch related company as American Made. There was a time when American made meant it was made in America, but the laws of making such claims have become loose as the government aims to expand on GDP and deter reliance on countries like China.

Why not have Shinola use the built in USA claim. Our cars assembled in the USA: Ford, GM , Chrysler have parts made overseas. Even Harley Davidson has some parts made overseas. Likely Indian Motorcycle Co too. Ironically the Japanese transplants are using parts made in the USA so they can keep costs down through just in time delivery. Eventually Shinola will transition to have the movements made here in the USA. They can benchmark off the ETA 2528 movement whose patent already expired (Sellita did with its SW200). The made in Switzerland movement does carry a pedigree and cache.… Read more »

It’s assembled in the US with swiss parts, probably not because it’s more expensive labor wise to make the parts here, but because it would be expensive to make the machinery or set up the parts factory in general. The assembly is the labor intensive part of the process anyway, so having american workers assemble it in the age of global products is pretty good. In detroit no-less.

I may be biased because my wife bought me one, but I’ve been very impressed with the quality.

In all honesty it would also be very wasteful and bad for the environment to build new equipment to make the parts for a watch if it’s feasible to get parts from one that’s already standing as well.

Justin. I agree. I have one as well and love it. Plus, the “Swiss-made parts” factor (at least when it comes to watches) adds some snob – appeal…

I think it’s a big stretch to say these Ronda movement are made in Switzerland. They are mostly produced in China.

It is a joke. Battery lasted 10 (!) months, not 54. I will try to return it, though they are not good with returns. Even to use warranty you need to pay $25.00 first to ship. Btw- case made in China. So is the bracelet.
Stay away.

Wow…this movement sure does pass through a lot of hands….half of parts made in CN, other half Swiss…then the whole mess is put together in the US, and called US made?

The real joke are all the Shinola haters fawning over “Swiss Made” watches and movements that are now mostly made in Asia just as much as they accuse Shinola of.

I do not not own a shinola but I do live in Detroit. American made. Funny how everyone has a problem with that description in a little watch but no one seems to care about the countless other products that are described in a similar fashion. For instance automobiles “made in the US” that are actually only assembled here from upwards of 70 to 90 percent foriegn sourced parts. Hanging on to the this “Swiss made label is really kinda meaningless these days anyway. I’ve had plenty of swiss made movements that have had issues or have failed completely. Its… Read more »

Have the same movement in a Zodiac Seadragon, but mine Says 10 Jewels Swiss only in gold finish Had and worn for probably at least 10 maybe up to 12 years now… Despite occasionally getting moisture in it over that time span a few times and opening it up to dry it out, (and is currently now…I wear it in the pool and sauna regularly) Always kept good time, Stop watch function still works. might have had to reset that to 0 1-2x, (but hardly ever use it) I don’t think need to adjust the time more than 2x a… Read more »

Can anyone please comment on the watch? Or is the only trait anyone wants to comment on is where it’s made? Perhaps someone knows how many American workers it takes to build a Swiss or Japanese watch…
