The Peacock caliber SL4801 (SL-4801) is an automatic column wheel chronograph movement. This caliber was introduced in 2023 and is part of Peacock’s SL-4 family of automatic chronograph movements.
The “SL” in the caliber number honors the company’s history and stands for Shoubiao Liaoning. Shou biao means watch in Mandarin; Liaoning is the province where Peacock Watch Group is located.
This movement is often found in Rolex Daytona homage/knockoff watches because of the similar subdial layout. But beyond the subdials, the SL-4801 is loosely considered Rolex 4130 clone. The reality is that while it may be based on a similar framework as the 4130, a stock SL-4801 is different enough to not be a clone or copy – but f*kes have been made from them. Caliber Corner has reached out to Peacock for more information and will update this post accordingly. In the meantime, they stated that they have at least 10 patents for the SL-4801 – we’re trying to get a list of those patents.
Some of the topics covered in this caliber listing:
SL4801 or SL-4801:
The official tech sheets and drawings refer to this caliber as SL4801, while the official website calls it the SL-4801.
When brands can’t decide on whether or not to use a hyphen in their caliber numbers, it is frustrating because it becomes an SEO issue. For example, Caliber Corner needs to pick one version for the title of the caliber listing, but which one? If SL4801 is chosen, then the page may not rank as well for searches including SL-4801. Also, it shows inconsistencies and lack of communication within companies that do this.
SL-4801 VS SL 4802:
There is a similar caliber SL-4802 with the main difference being that the SL-4802 is a skeletonized version of the SL-4801.
SL-4801 VS ETA 7753:
Typically, in the category of automatic chronograph watch movements, the first caliber the comes to mind is the ETA 7750 – this is also the calibre that is most often used as a reference point for comparison.
The 3-6-9 version of the 7750 is the cal. 7753, therefore, it is more accurate to compare the SL-4801 to the ETA 7753. You will see in the chart below that while they are both automatic chronographs, there are significant differences between them.
Specs | Peacock SL-4801 | ETA 7753 |
Diameter | 30.5mm | 30mm |
Height | 6.5mm | 7.9mm |
Jewels | 41 | 27 |
Chronograph System | Column wheel | Cam style |
Hand Sizes | 1.6mm / 1.09mm / .24mm / 3 x .23mm | 2mm / 1.2mm / .25mm / 3 x .18mm |
As you can see, the SL-4801 is 1.4mm thinner than the popular 7750 base, as well as using a column wheel rather than a cam system.
Aside from the specs compared in the chart above, the other major differences are in the functions:
The ETA 7753 has a date, whereas the SL-4801 is a true no-date movement. Both movements only have two crown positions, but because of its date feature, the 7753 also has an extra pusher on the side of the case at 10:00.
The subdial functionality can also help to quickly spot a 7753 VS SL4801:
Subdial | Peacksock SL-4801 | ETA 7753 |
3:00 | 30 mins counter | 30 mins counter |
6:00 | Small running secs | 12 hrs counter |
9:00 | 12 hrs counter | Small running secs |
The diagram above shows why the SL-4801 is preferred for Daytona-like watches rather than the ETA 7753 and 7753 clone movements.
Dial Side:
The dial side of the SL-4801 is finished with a perlage (pearling) method.
