The Panerai caliber P.2003 is an automatic “true” GMT movement with a 24 hour indicator and a power reserve indicator. Panerai states that the P.2003 is the brand’s first automatic movement to be “entirely designed and created by the Officine Panerai Manufacture in Neuchâte”.
In Panerai’s own words:
“An advanced automatic movement with an impressive 10-day power reserve, displayed via a linear indicator. With its three spring barrels connected in series with long, thin springs, the movement delivers a more consistent force over time, resulting in improved chronometry and precision. It has a seconds reset device for precise synchronization. Pulling the crown to the second position stops the balance wheel and resets the seconds hand to zero. Returning the crown to its normal position resumes normal operation. It also offers a GMT function with 24-hour indication, rapid local time adjustment, date, balance wheel stop, and a seconds reset device.” –Source
Some of the topics covered in this caliber listing:
P.2003 VS P.2002:
The P.2003 being discussed on this page is essentially the automatic version of the cal. P.2002.
Power Reserve:
The P.2003 has a lengthy 10 days of power reserve, translating to approximately 240 hours of runtime on a full wind. This is made possible thanks to its three barrel design, which means 3 mainsprings power the watch.
The amount of runtime remaining is displayed via a sliding style power reserve indicator at 6:00 on the dial. When the slider indicator is all the way left, the power reserve is on empty; all the way right is full.
Seconds Reset:
Many modern automatic watches have hacking seconds, where the seconds hand stops when the crown is pulled out, allowing for more precise setting of the time – in turn, allowing for more precision in monitoring the movement’s performance and accuracy. The Panerai calibre P.2003 takes this feature a step further with its Seconds Reset Device.
What this does is not only “hacks” the seconds, but once the crown is pulled out two clicks to time-setting mode, the seconds hand (in the subdial at 9:00) immediately jumps to 0 and stays there until the crown is pressed back in (ideally, when the reference time flips to the next minute).
Other Versions:
There is also a similar caliber P.2003/10 with a higher level of finishing, including perlage and skeletonization of the bridges and rotor. See below…
