The SII caliber VD53 is a quartz chronograph movement with 0 jewels. This movement is made in Japan.

VD53 Variations:

You may see this movement listed as the VD53, VD53A, VD53B, or VD53C. VD53 and VD53A are the same, this is the first version. The trailing letters A, B, and C represent the caliber evolution. As of June 05, 2018, official technical documents reference caliber VD53C.

Caliber VD53 Date Location:

There are many different VD53 models available. The differences between them is the date window position, the hands fitting type, stem type, or the color of the datewheel. The full list is here. The date is available in the following positions:

  • VD53C11 – Date at 3:00
  • VD53C144 -Date at 4:00
  • VD53C344 -Date at 4:00
  • VD53C14 – Date at 4:30
  • VD53C12 – Date at 6:00
  • VD53C19M – Date at 12:00

The date at 4:30 is the most common version of the VD53 because it is the only one that is a consistently stocked movement and part of ordinary production. The other versions are order based production.

Accuracy:

The VD53 is rated at having an accuracy of less than +/-20 seconds per month in normal temperatures.

Replacement Prices:

At the time of this post, replacement prices were found online in the range of $20-30 USD.

Examples of the VD53:

I am working at company distributor. We are dealing with watch parts business and present SEIKO movements (and others) on our market. According to supplier information (official SEIKO dealer) VD53B and VD53C are the same. The manufacturer just changed B to C.

I have a Masterline 1966 mens chronograph with caliber VD53. The watch itself is heavy, and therefore I don’t wear it often. My only negative about the watch other than weight (compared to others) is the stem comes completely out when pulled to reset the time. Does anyone know if the stem can be locked back into the movement with ordinary tools? The movement is on its third battery, I replace it myself.

Does anyone know, is it possible to swap this movement out of a case for a VK63 mecha-quartz without a lot of tinkering? One crown cutting, dial feet cutting, etc?

Samuel H.

I do know that the dial get are in different locations and the thickness of the VK63 is greater so depending on the case the stem might not be positioned right. The vk63 is also a bigger diameter. It’s not going to be straightforward that’s for sure. What is it you’re trying to do?

Trying to swap out the movement for this Lorus, would prefer if I could make the red second hand the chrono hand and the small seconds into an actual small seconds, rather than the chrono hand. It may not be possible, it just popped into my head to ask

I have an invicta 22442 that is supposed to have a VD53 movement, but instead has an ISA 6371 with small actual seconds at 3o’clock, 1/10 sec at 6 o;clock, 30 min at 9 0’clock , date between 4&5 and center chrono.

Have this movement on my Lorus Fusion VD53-X048.

I think that this has the silliest stop watch hand reset with the second hand winding back 60 seconds for every minute on the minute subdial of the elapsed time, quite bizarre when most stop watch seconds just reset back to the nearest minute

I have a star wars #1 model ‘first off the production line’ (of only #1977 produced) it is the Japanese style gold robot C-3-P-O!
They can sell anywhere about $1000-$3000 and are very cool. I am quite certain is uses this mechanism:) it has seemed to get stuck on the chronograph a couple of times but I’m not sure I gave it enough time to reset. See pic of it!

Second time I am posting a positive comment about the VD53C11 movement in my Invicta Pro Diver: simply, amazing how it keeps accurate time! Though I hardly wear it, so does the accuracy change drastically if worn 12 hours a day for a week straight, for example? Thank you.

You may add to your “Known Models” list the Invicta S1 Rally model number 44299. It specifically uses the VD53C12 variant with the date at 6 O’Clock.
