The Alpina caliber AL-650 is an automatic regulator style watch movement with an asymmetric hand layout.
Reference numbers of watches with the AL-650 will typically start with AL-650.
Base Caliber:
While the AL-650 used to be marketed as being based on the ETA/Unitas 6498-1, current models powered by the AL-650 are based on the Sellita caliber SW461-1.
The SW461-1 is a large size automatic movement (31mm compared to the SW200-1 at 26mm). It is not a regulateur style movement, but rather a small seconds movement (central hours and minutes, small seconds at 6:00).
Caliber Commentary:
Since the caliber evolved to become based on an entirely new framework, Alpina should have considered creating a new caliber number to avoid caliber confusion in the community.
