The Tudor caliber MT5621 automatic caliber is an in-house Certified Chronometer (COSC) movement. It is equipped with a bidirectional rotor system and variable inertia balance, micro-adjustment by screw. This caliber also features a non-magnetic silicon balance spring – a first for Tudor (aka Rolex).

In Tudor’s own words:

“This movement provides impressive autonomy. Its power reserve of approximately 70 hours means that its wearer can, for example, take off the watch on Friday evening and put it on again on Monday morning without having to wind it. Beating to a frequency of 28,800 beats/hour or 4Hz, the movement is regulated by a variable inertia oscillator with silicon balance spring, held in place by a traversing bridge fixed at both sides to improve resistance to shocks and vibrations. Its self-winding system is bidirectional. The movement is certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC).” (Source: https://www.tudorwatch.com/en/inside-tudor/watchmaking/movement-5621)

And this is after Rolex has been saying no silicone hairspirings and no see-through case backs for years! Liars!

That may very well be true for Rolex as a brand, but this is a Tudor movement 😛

Is it made by Rolex? I’m confused.

The Manufacture Calibre MT5621 is the very first in-house movement made by Montrés Tudor in their own facilities (with possible engineer help from Montrés Rolex). Introduced at Baselworld 2015, this news blew the watch industry journalist’s minds, because this was totally new, yet not unexpected. The North Flag also has many firsts for Tudor: – First use of ceramic in a ceramic/steel construction (ceramic ring is the bezel, topped with a stainless steel ring, and sits on a monocoque 316L stainless steel case). – First use of a sapphire display caseback – First use of a silicone hairspring in a… Read more »

Closely aligned to Rolex is a better way to think of Tudor. Ownership of the brand and control remains with the same source behind Rolex, but it is its own brand. It does benefit from the power and research that is available to it due to this arrangement.

This makes it look like Tudor is Rolex’s experimental division. My last 2 watches have been Tudor, one being a North Flag watch with this exact movement. I don’ think I will ever buy another Rolex. The Tudors are way cooler for less than half the price.
