The ETA caliber 2836-2 is a Swiss made automatic movement with 25 jewels. This movement is part of ETA’s Mecaline collection.

ETA 2836-2 Vs 2824-2:

The caliber 2836-2 is based on the ETA caliber 2824-2 with the main difference being that the 2836 has a day-date calendar complication and the 2824 is date only.

2836-2 VS 2834-2:

There is also a similar caliber 2834-2. The main difference here is that the 2836-2 features an inner day of the week calendar wheel, placing the day indicator left of the date at 3:00 on the dial (with abbreviated spelling). The 2834-2 has an outer day wheel, placing a panoramic style day of the week window at 12:00 (with the full spelling)

Setting the 2836-2:

  • Position 0 – Crown in hand-winding position (running position). This can be against the watch case in watches without a screw-down crown, or in unscrewed position on watches with a screw-down crown.
  • Position 1 (one click) – Quickset adjustment of the day and date. Turning the crown clockwise will advance the date. Turning the crown counterclockwise will advance the day of the week.
  • Position 2 (two clicks) – Time setting position with hacking seconds.

Note: To avoid damaging the movement, do not attempt to set the date when the hands are between the hours of 9pm and 3am.

Note on hacking seconds: ETA refers to hacking seconds as “stop-seconds” and “fine timing devices”. It is interesting to note that on tech docs dated 2010, ETA lists this functionality as being optional. From 2010 until now, hacking seconds has become an increasingly popular topic of discussion, especially with affordable movements and microbrands entering the market. Although you may never come across a non-hacking ETA 2836-2, if it was made around 2010 or earlier, it’s quite possible that it was manufactured that way excluding the optional stop-second device.

Power Reserve:

According to ETA, it takes a minimum of 27 winds of the crown to fully wind the movement. The watch community seems to agree on 30-40 turns being sufficient to reach full power reserve. In contrast, when depending primarily on the rotor (oscillating weight) to wind the movement, it can take up to 1,250 turns or 1 hour and 30 minutes of the movement in motion.

Although the power reserve of the 2824-2 based movements, including this 2826-2, is widely known to be around 38 hours (for example, as listed in ETA tech sheets dated 2015), the official ETA website claims this caliber has a “typical power reserve” of 42 hours (as of 2021). Please comment below as to the power reserve you have experienced with your 2836-2 powered timepieces.

Rotor Text:

Different watches may may have a custom rotor depending on the brand, but the stock ETA 2836-2 rotor from the factory reads:

TWENTY-FIVE 25 JEWELS SWISS MADE

Drawings:

Replacement Prices:

As with most ETA movements, although the 2836-2 is unavailable from ETA, replacements can still be found online. At the time of this post, prices for a single replacement movement were found in the range of $250 – $270 USD. Try here.

Examples of watches with the 2836-2:

These are photos of the caliber 2836-2 found in this Swiss Legend Abyssos dive watch, 25 jewels with an Incabloc Novodiac shock absorber, and stamped: V8AL4 / 128.

Pointer Date/Date Hand Version:

An ETA 2836-2 movement was also found in this Eterna KonTiki Four Hands with a pointer date aka date hand. Interestingly, there doesn’t appear to be any available documentation with regards to a 2836-2 with a pointer date, however, other brands have also offered this configuration (such as this Go

I love that at 11:59:59 the date is Sat 20 and at 12:00:01 the date is Sun 21. It is so fast if you blink you’ll miss it.

I am contemplating ordering a Sandoz Submariner TT diver’s day-date watch which uses the 2836-2 partly because of sentimental reasons, a Sandoz was my first long-term brand-new watch back in my high school and college days plus it is relatively scarce on the market.

How long would a Tissot Visodate have to be worn to develop the full power reserve of 40 hours? Will it achieve full power reserve simply by being wound manually?

Hand winding is the most efficient way to add power reserve to your watch. I think Tissot recommends 40 turns….But there is also a built in clutch which prevents harmful overwinding.

Define easily
with a timegrapher it’s easy to check if you need just to regulate the speed index or if you need to correct beat error (who could influence time keeping).
15 sec/ day not a lot but still on the 2836-2 properly serviced and regulated you can do much better

You CAN regulate your watch yourself. If course it means removing the back of the watch, from there most watches, (especially one of this quality) are pretty simple to adjust. Look on You Tube for videos. BUT I kind of agree with the other folks, If the watch is otherwise reliable…leave it alone and enjoy it.

I realise this is an old thread, but perhaps someone still reads these occasionally… I bought a grey market (so no warranty in my country) Tissot T-Navigator with 2836-2 movement which ran quite fast, about 30 seconds in 24 hours. I snapped off the caseback and – very carefully – took a jeweller’s screwdriver to the regulator’s adjusting screw. I turned it two click towards the minus marker, closed the caseback and hoped for the best. The result was far better than I had expected. The watch now runs within ONE SECOND accuracy per 24 h. I had read the… Read more »

The Tissot PR 100 P764 Automatic also uses this caliber. Tried finding out for sure before i purchased the watch but no information was found on the older PR 100 Automatics just the newer PR 100 Models had the Powermatic 80’s and the 2824-2 calibers.

I have Fortis Marinemaster with this movement – works amazing, -2.3 seconds/day worn, -0.4 sec/day in a winder (I use WatchCheck app). Not sure which grade Fortis uses but it seems they fine-tune their movements. My Longines Conquest is not as accurate although uses higher class movement (L888.3 based on ETA 2892-A2). Sadly Fortis brand is not broadly known. I think they marketing sucks.

I’m trying to build a good quality chronometer rated watch around the ETA 2836-2 movement. I’m unsure if anyone has done this lately. I’ve been on Ebay looking for chronometer rated calibers but haven’t found any for sale.

Is there a smart move that I am missing here?

Dave,

I have seen a nice case and want to build my own watch just like Tudor does and says that their 2836’s are then worth $3-4000 .. I’m not into the BS but I do want a decent watch.. I used a mechanical Rolex to navigate across the Indian Ocean about 40 years ago. I may end up doing an Atlantic and Pacific crossing before I pass away.. I’ve got to do the job right.. Don’t want to us a Rolex for that job..

Harvey I have a 2472 ETA coming to me that is chronometer rated. I thought it was a 2824-2 and that was my error. I’ve set my ideas on a particular case but chronometer rated 2824 or 2836 are quite tricky to find for sale on eBay.. I have date watches but no day-date watches. For me this is a personal thing. My sister ended up with my old Rolex 1016 Explorer that I bought new from a shop in London 48 years ago. I want my daughter to cherish when I’m gone some of my idiosyncratic thinking about the… Read more »

IS THE 2836 Calibre identical to the Catorex 80668 movement? It appears to be the same movement. I am unable to find information on the Swiss calibre 80668. The Catorex watch has a diamond and emerald dial. It is extremely rare. No images are available on the internet. Most observers identify it as a Rolex Presidential diamond watch. It is similar, but more aesthitic in appearance than the Rolex model.

The only Rolex known to use an out-sourced movement was the Daytona when it used the Zenith El Primero with the date mechanism deleted.

If you see a Rolex with an ETA movement it is a Frankenwatch which had the original movement replaced, probably to avoid the cost of a Rolex service.

Damasko DA44, after a couple of months settling down it now gains ~2 sec per 24H, so excelent.
What I noticed is that the movement goes better if you, so your watch too, are in motion. If you wind it with the crown and put it on the shelf for instance, the watch is less accurate, at least in my case…
